SPAN 232 Community-Based Learning Schedule

FALL 2007

Welcome to SPAN 232!  All students in SPAN 232 will work with a community partner for 2 hours each week throughout the semester.  This is stated clearly in the on-line course information (232).  The organizations that are our community partners serve Spanish-speaking communities in Champaign-Urbana.  During your work, you will gain cultural insights, and you will use a mix of Spanish and English.  Your work should benefit the community partner, and you should learn from your work as well.

Leaving campus does require figuring out transportation and factoring in “commute” times.  If you are not committed to going off campus and working in the community, you should drop this course.

If you are still unsure about taking this course, read the advice from the Fall 2006 students.  They found the experience very valuable, but you should know the following:

En general, para el curso de CBL

If you are committed to this course and the community-based learning component, please do the following:

·         read more about these organizations, their locations, and the advice of previous students

·         view bus routes and schedules

·         choose the organization in which you would like to work

·        Special Placements.  If you are already involved with a service organization that engages with the local Latino community, we want to support your work!  You may make a special request for your organization

·         view the organizations' schedules, read the specific instructions, and see if slots are available

·         from the available slots, choose 2 hours during the week that you would like to work (2 consecutive hours or 2 one-hour time slots)

·         choose a second option in case your first choice is not available

·         send an email to spanish-illinois@uiuc.edu with your request.  You can make a request for only one community partner.  Please follow the model when drafting your email to avoid any confusion.

MODEL:

Please note the following:

·         We will take requests in the order they are received; however, there will be a delay between the request time and the updated schedule.  We will read e-mail requests and post an updated schedule once a day.  Therefore, a time slot may appear available when it is not.

·         As you are scheduling your community work time for SPAN 232 and SPAN 202, please remember that volunteering in the community is a requirement for this course.  Therefore, no schedule changes will be allowed.  If you take a course that has a lab or a discussion section, you can’t pick up other courses or work during those times; it’s the same for this course.

·         Please notify us at spanish-illinois@uiuc.edu if you choose to drop the class so that other students will have the opportunity to take your place on the community work schedule.

·         If you are working at BTW or Central, please check to see if your background check has cleared.

·         Once the semester begins, if you must miss your community work for any reason, you must make up those hours as soon as possible, in consultation with the community partner and the course instructor.

Students are overwhelmingly satisfied with their experiences working in the community in this course, and they report that they appreciate the real-world, practical aspects of the course.  We look forward to working with you.
