¡Bienvenidos!
The Spanish section of the Department is comprised of faculty specializing in literature, culture or linguistics in the Iberian/Peninsular, Latin American and Latina/o context. The section is dedicated to examining the broad range of literatures and cultures produced by peoples with historical ties to Spain, Portugal and Spanish-America. The research and teaching of the section's faculty involves a wide range of cultural materials, including literary and historical texts, as well as art, film and different forms of popular culture. Our work is firmly rooted in the specific linguistic contexts (including Basque, Catalan, and Quechua as well as Spanish and Portuguese) and intellectual traditions in which these materials are produced. At the same time, it also attends to interdisciplinary questions of cultural expression and cross-cultural contact.
Students at both the graduate and undergraduate level explore questions of cultural identity, difference, contact and representation across a wide range of historical periods and texts. The aim of the section is to promote careful examination of Spanish, Latin American and Latina/o literatures and cultures and, thereby, prepare students to critically engage with the linguistic and cultural complexities of the world they inhabit.
