CONSULT SPANISH ADVISING WEBSITE:

A minor in Spanish requires a minimum of 18 hours in Spanish courses beyond SPAN 140, 141, 142, 143.  It must include 9 hours of core courses, plus at least 9 hours of electives. This information is also available at http://www.las.uiuc.edu/students/programs/SPAN/P_SPAN.shtml

NOTE:  MINORS ARE NOT GIVEN PRIORITY REGISTRATION FOR SPANISH COURSES AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO COMPLETE A SPANISH MINOR ON THIS CAMPUS.  STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO STUDY ABROAD TO COMPLETE MINOR COURSEWORK.  CHECK WITH THE STUDY ABROAD OFFICE (http://www.ips.uiuc.edu/sao/index.shtml) AND THE SPANISH ADVISOR.

OJO

(1)             DECLARING MINOR OFFICIALLY:  Students must officially declare the minor with their college after completing 60 hours of coursework.  This is achieved by filling out a Statement of Intent Form with the Spanish advisor and turning it into the student’s college.  If you have also studied abroad to complete some or all of the requirements of the Spanish minor, there is an additional form, the Minor Modification Form, to fill out with the Spanish advisor that denotes how the courses from abroad can be applied to the minor.  Your college needs this form to recognize that the minor has been completed. See minor website:  http://www.provost.uiuc.edu/students/advising/minorsdeclare.html

 (2)            COURSE SEQUENCING: Prerequisites need to be completed BEFORE taking a specific

course.  Students who register in courses without having completed the prerequisites will be required to drop the course.

(3)            SPAN 200:  Students who have taken the High School Advanced Placement Test can place out of courses that fulfill the university language requirement (100-level courses), as well as out of SPAN 200, and receive 11 credit hours for these courses.    Students who have lived and/or studied lengthily in a Hispanic country can be exempted from SPAN 200, via a Departmental exam.  This exam, however, does not award credit hours.  See the undergraduate advisor for further information.

(4)             Spanish courses taught in English will not count toward the minor  (SPAN 240, 242, 244, 246).

(5)             Spanish courses in TEACHING OF SPANISH will not count toward the minor (SPAN 471, 475, 477, 478).
