NOTE: It is important that all prospective Spanish teachers have a personal understanding of acquiring a second language in the classroom. Many students who pursue this program are already second language learners of Spanish and hence have this experience. Since heritage or native speakers of Spanish do not have this experience, it is strongly recommended that these speakers take at least 2 semesters of a non-Romance language (i.e., not French, Portuguese or Italian) in order to gain some understanding of the challenges that students face in the second language classroom. If you are a heritage or native speaker of Spanish, plan this coursework with your advisor.
1 This is a one-hour course. It is taken before you take SP ED 405. Be careful in planning as this course can have a time conflict with SPAN 471.
2 This course is 2 hours--offered in the fall only. Take the FLA section for foreign language teachers; plan to take this fall of student teaching year.
3 Prerequisite for this course: PSY 100
4 This course is the prerequisite for SPAN 475, SPAN 477 and SPAN 478. NO EXCEPTIONS MADE. Take this course before or during the semester you apply to the BAT program for Spanish. You must have reserved one 4-hour block of time between 8am and 3pm, Mon-Thurs for observation in a secondary school classroom the semester during which you take this course. This is in addition to the meeting times for the course.
5 Taken fall of senior year—4 hours. You will be placed in a minimum of 2 hours per week in a secondary school classroom for fieldwork.
6Taken during the first 6 weeks of the spring semester of the last year. 4 hours. You will be placed 8 hours per week in a secondary school classroom for fieldwork.
R Strongly recommended, but not required. See advisor for guidance. Many of the optional courses, if not taken, must be replaced with hours in Spanish.
